CLEANING SILK FLORALS OR ARTIFICIAL PLANTS

There is a simple way to clean your artificial plants (Silk or Artificial). Artificial plants, especially silk florals, are very resilient and will look new again after following these procedures.

At least once a month use a feather duster to lightly remove accumulated dust from the plant or arrangement.

When you can no longer remove the accumulated dust with a feather duster, silk flowers and artificial plants should be deep cleaned. Once you are in the mood you might as well clean them all at the same time.

First test a plant or silk arrangement to see if it will clean up easily by water spraying. Take a leaf off the item from an inconspicuous place (normally the back of the arrangement). Run it under tap water or spray it with the hose or sprayer that you intend to use. Shake it and let it dry. If it looks good, the entire artificial plant or silk flower arrangement will clean up the same way.

The quickest way to clean artificial plants and silk florals is to use plain water. The easiest way is to take the plants outside and spray them with a hose. IMPORTANT: Make sure the water pressure isn’t too high. You aren’t trying to blast the plants, just to clean them.  Do not use outside water if it is tapped from a “reclaimed water source”.  It would be best to use “house water” so lime and other deposits are not sprayed on the plant. If the artificial plant can be removed from its container it will be easier to clean.  Silk Floral arrangements do best when left in their vase so not to disrupt the location of the flowers. If you are unable to use a hose outside, a bathtub or shower that has a sprayer is the next best place to clean them. In fact it is recommended a bathroom sprayer be used instead of a hose on Silk Floral arrangements.

After a light spraying, shake the item and allow it to dry in the sunshine. Most small plants or floral arrangements can even be submerged in water without hurting them. Just make sure the vase/container does not retain water.

Remember: Silk florals will last a lifetime. If they should start to lose their luster, simply spray the greenery with a basic “Leaf Shine Lustrant” and the flowers with a “Silk Plant Cleaner”. Both are reasonably inexpensive and can be purchased from most craft or hobby stores (i.e. Michaels, Walmart, K-mart, Joann’s Fabrics, etc).   Happy artificial plant and silk floral cleaning!
